I know you have been talking about Sweeney Todd, which is a wonderful film, but I would like to put forward The Libertine for discussion it certainly is one of my favourites. In ST you end up feeling sorry for a mass murderer, which is quite an achievement for any actor. In the Libertine the earl should be so unlikeable that it is impossible to have any favourable reaction to him. However I ended up crying at the end of the film, and so sad for him. Johnny Depps performance in this film was extraordinary, his accent, his mannerisms and his control, no over acting when it could so easily have become a cliche. It was very dissapointing that it didn't get a universal release, and was not acknowledged by any of the award bodies, he deserved more.

raindogs, I couldn't agree more with what you said - The Libertine's one of my favourites as well! Amazing performance, brilliant in every single way and detail! If for any, Johnny should become an Oscar for that role. Hats off, that's the movie in which you really can see how amazing and hughely talented actor he is!
The end, yes... It gets you at the end, doesn't it? And then he asks 'Do you like me... now?' It tells so much...
Aw, it's a sad movie, actually, but it has some deeper meaning and message within. And I agree - it's sad it didn't get more recognition and confirmation... If you ask me, that's practically his most demanding role - so many emotions changing there, and you can see everthing in his eyes, without even speaking... Outstanding, I'm so proud of him for that role!
But honestly, it's for a bit more mature audience. Perhaps that's the reason it wasn't a 'hit movie' - but we, true admirers, can and do appreciate it so much, don't we?
Johnny certaily deserves it.

I knew I wasn't the only one Mrs Sparrow. It is almost painful to watch sometimes but compelling all the same. He obviously put in so much effort, and seemed to lose himself in this character it must have hurt. At the end when he asks 'Do you like me now?' I cannot stop myself from answering YES YES YES!!!
Of course you are right it is aimed at a more adult audience, and weren't there problems with the distribution at the time so that may account for the non recognition, but I'm still not letting them all off with totally ignoring this film and Johnnys' performance.
I know he is not really interested in the awards and all that stuff, but he must be dissapointed sometimes when a film is just passed over, although he does seem to like the fact that a lot of his films become cult movies, and probably stick around for a lot longer than the daft blockbusters that seem to get all the gongs. Still as you so rightly say we true admirers do appreciate it, and all of Johnnys' efforts.

raindogs, Mrs.Sparrow, I totally agree with you both. I have this movie in my collection and I also cried at the end. I felt this was a man, clearly unhappy with life and only cared for his fleshy appetites. Through his bad choices, he contracts a deadly illness. When it was too late, he became remorseful for his actions and tried to be repentant. I cried when he did die and his question, "Do you like me now?" YES. You can't help but feel the tragedy of it all. I tend to be very or overly analytical about movies, so you'll have to pardon me. I always felt this was one of his better roles because of the complexity of it.
